7 Super-Foods to Keep Your Kids Healthy

It’s hard for us adults to keep away from junk food and sweets. Obviously, keeping kids away from such treats is going to be a tough task.

But keeping your child away from junk food is not all that’s necessary. It’s equally important for you to make sure you’re feeding him the right things.

Here are seven super-foods that you can easily source and that will do wonders for your child’s health.

Oatmeal


Steel-cut, instant, or rolled- whatever you prefer, all types of oats are good for health. Oats are rich in fiber and have a low amount of fat content. They are also rich in iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamin A, and have small amounts of niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, and magnesium present.

The high fiber content of oats helps kids feel full for longer and also improves bowel movement. As oats have a low Glycemic Index, they are less likely to be stored as fat, thus reducing the risk of juvenile diabetes, heart disease, and pediatric obesity.

Oats have more protein and fewer carbohydrates than other whole grains and are believed to help reduce the risk of asthma in children. Furthermore, sugary cereals can cause the blood-sugar levels to rise and fall dramatically, thereby affecting mood, concentration, and memory. On the other hand, oats are absorbed slowly and the gradual rise in blood-sugar levels keeps kids energetic up to lunch time.

By opting for oats and making sure you're not buying sweetened ones, you can be sure that your little one is eating right. Even if you’re picking freebies samples, take note of the nutritional information.

If your kid doesn't love eating oats, you can add honey; skim milk; dried fruit such as apricots, raisins, or cranberries; nuts; or fresh fruit like bananas or apples to enhance the taste of oatmeal.

Yogurt


Yogurt is a perfect balance of all things good. It has protein, carbohydrates, fats, and essential minerals. Moreover, it's densely packed with nutrients. Such foods are important for kids as they have small tummies and you'd want them to get as many nutrients as possible even if they eat a small amount of food.

Additionally, yogurt is much easier to digest than milk. As it is cultured, it helps boost immunity and aid digestion. It also helps your child absorb vitamins and minerals better.

Eggs


This simple food is not only a hit with adults but kids too. Eggs are easy to cook and you can make them in many ways. You can also incorporate vegetables into egg recipes like quiches for a complete meal.

Eggs are densely packed with nutrients and though they have lesser calories packed in, they are a rich source of amino acids that are essential for your child's growth. Eggs are also loaded with other vital nutrients like vitamin D, vitamin B12, choline, and selenium.

Amino acids in eggs are important for growth and they are the building blocks of hormones, tissues, skin, and more. Choline helps in brain development, and vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium. In addition to this, an egg or two for breakfast will keep your little one feeling satisfied and full for longer.

Beans and Lentils


Beans and lentils are great sources of proteins for kids who don't eat meat. These foods are also high in fiber and have a low Glycemic index, and will thus keep your kid's mood and energy levels stabilized. Beans are also rich in calcium and help reduce the risk of cholesterol and heart diseases.

If you're buying canned beans, drain and rinse them to get rid of excess salt. You can also make your own beans. It's not that difficult to get kids to eat beans, but if you have a picky eater, use them mashed, in soups or stews, or use beans to make nachos or quesadillas, veggie burgers, burritos, hummus, etc.

Nuts and Seeds


Kids are bound to reach for unhealthy items like fries or soda whenever they feel hungry. Encourage your child to snack on some nuts and seeds instead. Sure, they are rich in fats too, but nuts and seeds are sources of good fats compared to the unhealthy fats found in fried foods.

Nuts and seeds are also rich in fiber, vitamin E, sterols, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids. All these nutrients promote overall health and reduce the risk of heart and circulatory diseases, and stroke. Nuts and seeds also contain trace amounts of different minerals like copper, manganese, phosphorous, magnesium, etc.

Make sure your kid only eats a handful of nuts or seeds every day. Some nuts and seeds to snack on include walnuts, almonds, pecans, chia seeds, flax seeds, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Note that peanuts aren't real nuts, they are legumes and as such, less nutritious.

You can roast these nuts and seeds or add them to salads or steamed vegetables. You can also treat your kid to nut butters instead of the usual peanut butter. Be sure to pick a jar of unsweetened nut butter (cashew, almond, or blended) when you go grocery shopping next time.

Salmon


Fatty fish like salmon is the best source of DHA and other omega-3 fatty acids that are an important component of brain cells. These fats can boost brain development, fight depression, and are anti-inflammatory.
Studies show that consumption of oily fish such as salmon lowers the risk of diseases like cancer, asthma, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Macular Degeneration, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, etc.

Blueberries


Blueberries are what you can call a true super-food. They are rich in anthocyanin, vitamins C and E, flavonoids, iron, and manganese. This fruit is also packed with anti-oxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Make sure your kid eats a handful of this super-fruit at least thrice every week. This shouldn't be tough; blueberries are tasty and can be eaten on their own. You may also want to include a few in your kid's breakfast cereal or along with his favorite dessert.

26 Yummy Cookies and Bars for the Holidays!

It's time to start baking for the holidays! I enjoy baking pies, breads and other delicious treats in the fall, but in the winter it's all about cookies and bars! This year, we'll be testing a few new recipes and making our the traditional sugar and chocolate chip cookies. We'll also be making our house favorite, buckeyes! They aren't cookies or bars, but they are oh so yummy!

When the kids were younger, they weren't big fans of gingerbread. It was a bit too 'spicy' for them. I'm hoping that this year, their tastes will have change enough to enjoy these delicious and beautiful gingerbread cut out cookies!



For Dan, I think he may enjoy the Italian Christmas cookies. They look so light and sweet!

I love sugar cookies. A lot. I can't pass them up and I'm so disappointed when they aren't yummy. I have a difficult time getting them as sweet and soft as I want. So I'm going to try this recipe for Buttery Cut-Out Sugar Cookies W/ Icing That Hardens. The kids will enjoy making these as they love anything they get to shape. We have around 200 cookie cutters and this turns into an all afternoon project. So much fun!



I'm deciding whether or not I want to make the Caramel Cookie Cheesecake Bars and take them to the family Christmas party. They look so good, but I'm not sure I really want to share them. Though, it is always fun having bringing the dessert that disappears the quickest, isn't it?

Colorful Bow Tie Pork - Delicious!

Standing by my side as I monitored the skillet and put the finishing touches on dinner, Joey grinned and then took off sprinting through the house.  I found out later that he had rushed to Dan to let him know that dinner smelled "So good!!"  I'd love to take the credit - but the Smithfield® Peppercorn & Garlic Pork was the reason for his excitement.

I do love seeing him get so excited about dinner!  He's so funny.  But I was also excited about this meal.  I found a fun and colorful recipe for Colorful Bow Tie Pork on foodlion.com that helped to brighten our weekly meal plan.  I love planning our family meal time - but admittedly, we can get into a routine of having the same meals week after week.  This was a nice addition to our list of favorites.  It was also a quick and easy meal to prepare.  Prep time was only about 15 minutes and was ready to serve at around 20 minutes. 

We typically enjoy any meal that includes pasta but I often have a difficult time including vegetables in with our pasta dishes.  I also never think to use pork with our pasta - so this was a nice change! 

Colorful Bow Tie Pork

Ingredients:

  • 1 Smithfield® Peppercorn Seasoned Boneless Sirloin Roast, cut into 3/4-inch cubes
  • 1½ teaspoons minced garlic
  • 2½ cups chopped fresh broccoli
  • 1½ cups sliced carrots
  • 1¼ cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large tomato, diced
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 12 oz. bow tie pasta, cooked

Breakfast for Dinner - Fall/Winter Meal Planning

We are back into our Fall/Homeschool schedule. This means, that our meals are very much scheduled. I plan our meals weekly and keep a calendar in the kitchen that lets the family know what they can expect for that week. This helps the grocery shopping time to be spent more efficiently and helps my day to run much more smoothly.

It's also a great help for Savannah and Joe - they do well when they can see what snacks and meals are coming up. They love to give suggestions and ask that their favorite foods be added to the lineup.

As we near the Fall and Winter months - I love to add dinners that are more like breakfast. I love sausage, bacon and eggs - and enjoy using them in our dinner meals. I've collected several recipes on Foodie.com that I plan to use over the next few months as I schedule "Breakfast for Dinner" once a week.

Summer is the busiest time of year for our family.  I always, naively, believe that Summer will be relaxing and I'll have time to try a dozen new recipes and bake all sorts of pies.  Yet - somehow - life always gets in the way.  We have baseball games nearly four nights a week, family reunions, vacations, special trips - and the list goes on.

I have been craving seafood.  We recently vacationed at the beach - and we never ended up locating a seafood restaurant that had just what I wanted.  So, all Summer - I've been on the hunt for amazing seafood dishes.  We enjoy crab dip and grilled salmon - but I've decided to throw a few more recipes into the mix. I've put together a delicious collection of Seafood Dishes on Foodie that I am hoping to try.

I'm excited to try the Seafood Risotto. Risotto with mushrooms has become a favorite of mine over the past year and I'm dying to try it with seafood. I'm sure Dan would enjoy this as well.


I absolutely love crab cakes and can't wait to give these Impossibly Easy Mini Crab Cake Pies a try! Speaking of crab - this lasagna recipe calls for a mix of king crab, shrimps and scallops. I imagine that this will also be a delicious dish!

I'm saving the Classic Maritime Seafood Chowder recipe for this Fall and Winter. I don't usually choose soups and chowders for Summer - so this will be a great addition to the menu for those more chilly of days.

Though Risotto has become a recent favorite - my number one seafood entree of choice has always been a Shrimp Alfredo. This Creamy Seafood Alfredo will probably be the first recipe that I try. I have not previously made my own Alfredo sauce but am looking forward to learning something new!

Summer Must Have: Primula Cold Brew Coffee

No matter what time of year it is, I enjoy having coffee. A hot cup of coffee, an iced-coffee treat and even coffee flavored ice cream. Yes, that last one isn't actually coffee - but it is delicious!

I was first introduced to iced-coffee during my college years. I started each day with a hot cup of java, that I brewed in my tiny little dorm room, and never imagined that my coffee would be any different.  Yet, one day as I wondered through the food court, my eyes caught a glimpse of this wonderful, cold creation. I gave it a whirl and have been hooked ever since.

To create my iced-coffee, I usually save back the unused portion of my morning coffee in order to create a yummy drink later in the afternoon. This Summer, I've been using the Primula Cold Brew Glass Carafe Brewing System - Iced Coffee Maker


50 oz Cold Brewed Carafe makes rich, delicious full bodied coffee concentrate that is 65% less acidic than hot brewed coffee. This carafe makes 16 cups of prepared iced coffee and will last up to 14 days when stored in the fridge. The glass carafe is made of borosilicate and can withstand extreme temperatures without risk of cracking.

The base has a silicone ring around the bottom for secure grip to table or side of the fridge door.

The Primula Cold Brew Carafe is perfect for your Summer iced-coffee! Instead of needing to save back unused coffee each day and making sure I rotate out old coffee - I can make it in the carafe and simply use it until it is gone. The instructions say that it will last up to 14 days.  However, I go through it much faster than that and haven't given it the chance to last that long.


Having not previously brewed the coffee in a traditional coffee maker, I find that the iced-coffee has a much smoother taste.

Depending on my mood, I still flavor the coffee with any of the following:
  • Sugar
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk
  • Half & Half
  • Flavored Syrups (Hazelnut!)

However, I very much enjoy just eating inside the park.  This year, I've finally looked into purchasing a meal deal or plan.  If you plan to spend a lot of time at the park - I think it is well worth the money.


We purchase season passes each year to Kings Island - and the All Season Dining Plan would absolutely be worth the time I would save by not preparing picnic meals ahead of time.  We visit Kings Island a lot and the price per person would more than pay for itself over the course of one season.

Summer is here and we're nearing the 4th of July celebration - which is one of my favorite times of the year! I love the festivals, fairs and parades that happen in our county during this season. So many fun activities to enjoy and food to try! I especially love getting to host and attend friends and family during the 4th of July. The grilling and bonfires make for wonderful memories. Food is a big part of our celebration!

Check out the recipes I've collected for this year's 4th of July celebration. I, personally, can not wait to try the Bursting Blueberry Skillet Pie! I love using my iron skillet but have yet to make a pie in it. I hope this goes well!

Joey love anything if it is Red, White & Blue - especially when it's food. I think he'll be thrilled with the Fireworks Cupcakes and the Baked Vanilla Bean Doughnuts.

I am so excited that warmer weather is finally here.  Though it isn't officially Summer - we are enjoying our backyard and the outdoors once again!  We love to have lunch or dinner out on our patio and invite our family and friends over to enjoy food from the grill and treats from the bonfire.   

I've put together a delicious collection of Outdoor Entertaining items that I would love to try this year and in the future.  I'm not sure which meats we'll try first - but we'll probably try a couple of them the first time around!

Pork chops are one of my favorite items to grill.  There are so many different marinades and seasonings to try - I'm not sure which has been my favorite.  (Though I tend to lean toward anything BBQ!).  I'm looking forward to trying the Grilled Mongolian Pork Chops this Summer!

I have tried everything I can think of to help Dan become a fan of watermelon.  It is one of my favorite Summer foods.  For me, just adding a dash of salt makes it the perfect side item or snack.  He doesn't care for it so much.  However, he does love Jalapeno.  So perhaps, he'll enjoy this Grilled Watermelon with Smoked Salt and Jalapeno Rings recipe



For the kids, I'm going to try the Honey Barbeque Chicken Drumsticks.  They've inherited their mamas love for barbeque - so I'm sure it will be a win for them if it's on a drumstick!

I think it's amazing all of the different recipes I've been able to find for hot dogs!  Something that, quite honestly seems so plain and boring, can actually be made and seasoned hundreds of ways.  I'll give these Killer Bacon-Cheese Dogs a try!  They had me at bacon!

Have you put together a menu for your Mother's Day celebration? One of my favorite parts of any celebration or get-together is the food! I enjoy trying to create a new dish and love the unique items that everyone else has brought. Though, I'll have to admit that my favorite table is always the dessert table!

I've put together a delicious collection of Mother's Day dessert items that I would love to try this year and in the future.  I'm having a difficult time deciding what to try and create first.

I enjoy all types of sweets - especially when you mix the tartness of a strawberry with something sweet. I think the Cheesecake Stuffed Strawberries is a fun twist on one of my favorite desserts! The bit-sized treat is sure to be a hit.

Dan makes the best Peanut Butter Pie that I have ever tried - but I think the Peanut Butter Brownie Dessert may be just as tempting to try.

However, I have always enjoyed the Banana Split Cake that my mother makes for family get-togethers. The Banana Split Ice-Cream Cake may be a fun twist on her creation and I think it would be fun to do something similar to her best know dessert dish.

I may come home with the ingredients to several of these desserts - I can't decide which one I'd like to try first!

Tips for keeping young athletes hydrated this Summer

Each Summer – we spend a lot of time outdoors and in the heat. The many hours of playing with my children and exposing myself to the harsh Summer sun is draining on my body. I’m not sure why, but my body tends to dehydrate easily and quickly.

When my muscles begin to ache and that hint of a headache appears – I tend to lean on the traditional rehydration drinks. I do my best to consume a lot of water – but that doesn’t always prevent a trip to the emergency room to receive fluids. I get a little nauseated thinking about the thousands of dollars that have been spent on something as seemingly simple as treating dehydration.

If you have any ideas on what causes this – I would love to know! As for now, I’ve found a great to help prevent my body from dehydrating – Drip Drop. I love that this this is a product! Drip Drop comes in a small packet that I can slip into pocket and have ready should I need to add it to my bottle of water. It dissolves just as the water flavorings we carry around for the kids. I enjoy the taste – and enjoy that it is much less expensive than a trip to the ER.

So, when I feel that first hint of dehydration – I pull out my Drip Drop packet and dissolve it in 16.9oz of water. I no longer need to make a mad dash for the convenience store to purchase the bulky bottles of rehydration drinks.

As Spring turns to Summer – I can also use this to prevent any signs of dehydration. I plan to have a glass of Drip Drop in the morning may be what I need to help me through the very humid months here in the Midwest. Drip Drop absorbs 3 times faster than plain water – so, this is probably the best hydrating method for me.

Not only do I need to stay hydrated - so do the kids!  We're outside playing baseball a lot in the Summer.  Several hours out on the ball diamond and in the heat can really wear on their little bodies.  Keeping them hydrated is very important.  Last year, I sent a bottle of water - packed with ice.  This year, we'll include Drip Drop.

Athletes should always drink enough fluid before, during and after practice.


The Youth Sport Safety Alliance found that up to two-thirds of youth athletes often start practice suffering from mild to moderate dehydration. Thus, it’s especially important that your kids hit the fluids before they hit the field. Not only should you sent water with your athlete - make sure they've hydrated before their practice and that they hydrate once they're finished.


  • Kids should drink 500-600 ml of water or an electrolyte-enhanced drink, like Drip Drop, 2-3 hours before practice.
  • 10-20 minutes before practice, youngsters should drink an additional 200-300 ml.
  • Educate kids about dehydration. The warning signs every athlete should recognize include dizziness, thirst, headaches, cramping and weakness.

Holiday Baking!

I love everything about this time of the year. I love the lights, parties, gift exchanges, anticipation, stories and most of all - I enjoy the food! It seems as if everyone I know has a special dish that they create during this special season.

My holiday baking list is seemingly a mile long. It never appears that way when Savannah and I set out to complete our baking. However, by the fifth batch of cookies, we're ready to sit on the couch and enjoy a few cookies, buckeyes and chocolate cherry bars.

Though we have a lot treats to choose from - we seem to favor chocolate chips cookies. Savannah and I make several batches of them and change the recipe a bit for each. Some are made with white chocolate chips and others are a combination of peanut butter chips with chocolate chips. The kids love to make one large, gingerbread man, chocolate chip cookie! I love it. It reminds me of the large chocolate chip cookies my college roommate and I would get at the mall.



Chocolate Chips Cookies:


Ingredients


:: 3/4 cup granulated sugar

:: 3/4 cup packed brown sugar

:: 1 cup softened butter (Use butter not margarine! Your cookies will bake much better.)

:: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

:: 1 teaspoon almond extract (I began adding this a few years ago - love it!)

:: 1 egg

:: 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

:: 1 teaspoon baking soda

:: 1/2 teaspoon salt

:: 1 cup coarsely chopped nuts

:: 1 package of chips - your choice! (I switch between using semisweet, milk chocolate, white chocolate, peanut butter chips and your choice of nuts. For the white chocolate chip cookies - I do not add cocoa powder to the dough.)


Mix and Bake!


:: Preheat oven to 375ºF

:: Combine white sugar, brown sugar, softened butter, vanilla and egg.

:: Stir in flour, baking soda and salt.

:: Fold in chips and nuts.

:: Place parchment paper on cookie sheet.

:: Drop dough onto cookie sheet. I use a tablespoon to measure each cookie and round them off.

:: Bake cookies 8 to 10 minutes. I bake for 9 minutes.

Hot Chocolate is a big part of our Winter.  We make it after playing in the snow.  We take it with us when we go out to look at the pretty lights and decorations.  We sip it as we sit and enjoy the soft light of our Christmas tree in the evening.


We love making different variations of the drink and use whipped cream along with every type of marshmallow we can find.  Savannah and Joey love the multicolored and the snowman shaped marshmallows.  I love adding a peppermint stick to my hot chocolate.

There are so many ways to make and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate.  Milk Unleashed has a lot of ideas that I had never imagined!  Check out the ideas below - especially number two!!


1. Add marshmallows as you’re heating the chocolate milk and let them totally dissolve for a thick, gooey treat. Float a few more on top.

2. Still have Halloween candy hanging around? Drop a mini bar (one without nuts) and let it melt into deliciousness.

3. Cinnamon sticks are always handy this time of year. Infuse your hot chocolate with a stick or two.

4. Kids like hazelnut almost as much as peanut butter. Stir in a spoonful of the chocolate-hazelnut spread.

5. Try the un-chocolate hot milk. Just warm some milk and flavor with honey and cinnamon.

6. Puree a half banana for each cup and stir into the hot chocolate. Garnish with a bit of whipped cream and banana chip.

7. Stir in a peppermint stick for a classic, holiday flavor. Then rim the mug with crushed peppermints.

8. While adults are drinking hot toddies…make hot toffees for the kids…stir some butterscotch chips into hot milk.

I love this tradition of hot chocolate during the holidays.  I have so many great memories already.  I hope Savannah and Joe have sweet memories from this sweet treat!

Happy Thanksgiving - Apple Pie

Every Fall, I love to browse blogs and recipe sites for new holiday dishes. Each year, Savannah and I try a new cookie, cake, bread or the latest dessert fad to throw into our holiday baking. This year, even though we hadn't enjoyed Oreo Truffles - we decided to try making them ourselves. They were so fun and easy to create!

Having managed to drop my food processor down the basement stairs - we were left to crush the Oreos by hand. After the crushed Oreos were mixed with cream cheese, rolled into balls and dipped in chocolate. We finally had our new dessert for Holiday Baking 2013. However, we still didn't enjoy them very much.

Except for Joey. He very much loves sweet, chocolate anything. He's already requesting more. We'll see about that.
The rest of us will stick to the peanut-buttery goodness of Buckeyes.

Out of all the treats, cookies and pies - my mother-in-law's apple pie remains my favorite. As hard as I try, I can never make it as perfect as she does. Every year, I try. Though I just can't get the topping quite right. Everything she makes is always wonderful - but I very much look forward to having her apple pie on Thanksgiving.



Apple Pie


Pie Crust:

2 1/4 cups flour
3/4 tsp salt
3 tbsp milk
3 tbsp sugar
3/4 cup oil

Mix in pie plate with fork until crumbly, Press into shape. Prick bottom.

Apple Pie Filling:

7 cups of pared, peeled, and sliced Granny Smith apples
1 1/4 cups sugar
3 tbsp flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp lemon juice
2 tbsp butter or margarine

Combine all ingredients except butter and mix. Pour into pastry-lined pie pan. Dot with butter. Put topping on top and bake at 425 for about 45 min. Don't let the topping get too brown.

Streusel Topping

1 cup flour
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 cup butter or margarine

In mixing bowl, combine flour, brown sugar and cinnamon. Cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over fruit filling.

Dirty Franks Hot Dog Palace

Not only do we love to travel and visit different places to see new sites and scenery - we also love to try new restaurants and foods.  As often as possible, we will avoid restaurants that are available to us where we live - and opt for a menu that is different.  Finding a local favorite while we're traveling adds to the overall experience of visiting a new city.  We love finding restaurants that are rare and memorable.

Dirty Franks Hot Dog Palace has by far the most unique menu that I have sampled.  With over thirty hot dog items on the menu - you will find something to fit any taste.  That number doesn't even include creating your very own dog!

Dan tried the T-Dog (topped with sriracha mustard, roasted red peppers, bacon bits and cheddar) and Puff the Magic Popper (topped with cheddar cream cheese, jalapeno and real bacon bits).  I had Slappy Pappy's Super Sloppy dog.  It came with bacon (they had me at bacon!), coney sauce, cheddar, sour cream and french fries.  The french fries came on top of the dog!


Savannah and Joey each had a chili dog - and loved them!  Joey and Dan tried the soft, salty pretzels as their sides.  We all enjoyed a basket of fried leeks as an appetizer.  None of us had previously eaten fried leeks - but Tracey H. of Dirty Franks recommended we give it a go.  Glad she did!

I had really wanted to save room for their funnel fries - but we all spent a lot of time sampling each other's food.  I was left with absolutely no room.  So, hopefully we'll make it to Columbus, Ohio again and get a chance to try even more of their fun and tasty menu!    


When you visit Dirty Franks - make sure you give yourself extra time.  It is a very popular restaurant and you may have to wait in line... out the door and down the sidewalk.  It is very much worth the wait and you'll not want to miss out on trying as much of the menu as you can.

How to Cook a Healthy Pizza That Your Kids Won't Know Is Healthy


It's not often you see the words "healthy" and "pizza" used in the same sentence. As you're well aware of, pizza is a ridiculously healthy yet notoriously unhealthy food choice for you and your family.

The Chicago Classic Individual Size Deep Dish Pizza at Pizzeria Uno has over a day's worth of calories for most folks (2,300), and over two day's worth of fat (164 grams) and sodium (4,910 milligrams).

If you want to make smarter, healthier food choices for your family but still want a great-tasting, crowd-pleasing pizza, I've got just the recipe for you.


How to Make a Healthy Pizza 


There are several simple tips you can use to turn an unhealthy pizza into a healthy one:

1. Opt for a whole grain thin crust.

Buy a whole wheat or whole grain crust instead of a white one. And if you can find a thin whole wheat crust, that's even better because it'll save you additional calories.

2. Use lots of veggies.

If you have kids that will frown upon this, hide the veggies under the cheese or blend some spinach and onions together with your tomato sauce and they won't even know.

3. Use lean meats.

Pepperoni, sausage and bacon may be delicious, but they add lots of calories, salt, and fat to your pizza. So go with chicken or ham instead to please the carnivores in your clan.

4. Pick up a low-sodium tomato or marinara sauce.

Pizza contains a lot of salt, but you can cut back on that sodium content drastically by buying a low sodium tomato sauce.

5. Grab a bag of reduced fat cheese.

This will help you cut back on the calories and fat. You still want some fat though for flavor, so stay away from the fat free dairy products.

So now that you're equipped with the tips you need to succeed, let's show you how to make your soon-to-be-delicious pizza.


Healthy Chicken Supreme Pizza Recipe


Ingredients:
• 1 Whole Wheat Pizza Crust
• 4 oz. Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breast
• 1 Tomato
• 1 Cup Spinach
• 1/2 Onion
• 1/2 Green Pepper
• 1/2 cup Reduced Fat Shredded Mozarella Cheese
• 1/2 cup Low Sodium Tomato Sauce
• Salt and Pepper

Instructions:
1. Heat a pan to medium heat and spray with cooking spray. Cook chicken breast for 5-6 minutes.Flip chicken breast and cook for another 5 minutes. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper.
2. Chop the onion and green pepper and saute in the same pan with the spinach for about 5 minutes.
3. Spread tomato sauce over the crust. Top with onion, green pepper, spinach, and diced tomato.
4. Cut chicken into half-inch cubes and spread evenly over pizza.
5. Top pizza with mozarella cheese.
6. Cook for 8-10 minutes at 400 (or according to the instructions on the crust package). Let cool, cut pizza into 8 slices and serve.
Nutrition Facts (per 2 slices):
303 calories, 9 g fat, 37 g carbs (7.5 g fiber), 19 g protein, 488 mg sodium
