KidKraft Limited Edition Toy Box

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

We're gearing up to redecorate Savannah's room. There are a few items that she really wants included in the re-design - but she is adamant on a bench. She use to have a plastic toy box/bench that sat at the foot of hear bed, near her window. She had a blanket folded neatly on top of the bench and would sit in the sunlight and read from her favorite books. She remembers those moments fondly - and her daddy has brought up the memories he has of walking by and seeing that picture.

I think his recollection is what more prompts her to want another bench - but whatever the case, I think they are adorable. One of my picks for this piece of furniture is the KidKraft Limited Edition Toy Box. I love the curvature of the back which reminds me a lot of the bench I had in my room when I was little.

What others are saying

"My skin is really dry and sometimes flaky even though I exfoliate like crazy. I have been looking for a product that contains Retinol that doesn't make my skin even drier and I really think this is it. After applying this I feel the plumping properties working, its a nice light tingle that absorbs quickly leaving nice smooth moisturized skin. The green tea, vitamins E and B5 and plant derived hyaluronic acid leaves my skin hydrated so I haven't had to worry about any extra dryness.

Pioneer Girl: The Laura Ingalls Wilder Annotated Autobiography

Sunday, February 8, 2015

My feelings for this are very mixed. In a way, I want to keep my idealistic view of Laura's life and her adventures across the prairie. Yet, I always want the truth. What really happened and why?

Hidden away since the 1930s, Laura Ingalls Wilder's never-before-published autobiography reveals the true stories of her pioneering life. Some of her experiences will be familiar; some will be a surprise. Pioneer Girl re-introduces readers to the woman who defined the pioneer experience for millions of people around the world.

Through her recollections, Wilder details the Ingalls family's journey from Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, back to Minnesota, and on to Dakota Territory sixteen years of travels, unforgettable stories, and the everyday people who became immortal through her fiction. Using additional manuscripts, diaries, and letters, Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography builds on Wilder s work by adding valuable context and explores her growth as a writer.

Author of an award-winning Laura Ingalls Wilder biography, editor Pamela Smith Hill offers new insights into Wilder s life and times. In an introduction, Hill illuminates Wilder s writing career and the dynamic relationship between the budding novelist and her daughter and editor, Rose Wilder Lane. Sharing the story of Wilder s original manuscript, Hill discusses the catalysts for Pioneer Girl and the process through which Wilder s story turned from an unpublished memoir into the national phenomenon of the Little House series.

Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography also explores the history of the frontier that the Ingalls family traversed and the culture and life of the communities Wilder lived in. This groundbreaking volume develops a fuller picture of Wilder s life and times for the millions of readers who wish to learn more about this important American author. It contains one hundred and twenty-five images, eight fully researched maps, and hundreds of annotations based on numerous primary sources, including census data, county, state, and federal records, and newspapers of the period.

An important historic and literary achievement, this annotated edition of Pioneer Girl provides modern readers with new insights into the woman behind the fictional classics Little House in the Big Woods, Farmer Boy, Little House on the Prairie, On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, These Happy Golden Years, and The First Four Years.

Decorating a Rustic Home

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

Everything rustic has a charm of its own. Farmhouse chic or rustic chic really caught on in the past couple of years with many of us yearning to have the warmth, coziness, comfort and simplicity of a simpler lifestyle in our home.

Rustic charm need not be limited to pallet shelves and string rope artifacts alone. A stunning rustic décor can also be achieved by incorporating elements which are personal favorites to you, and blending them in with your existing décor to ooze countryside charm.

Rustic décor needs to be understated and simple. If you overdo it, the décor will look unnatural, contrived and stifling. So try to keep it minimal and bring in the accents in as subtle a manner as possible.
Your bedroom is where you spend the most time in a day. So let’s see how you can bring in the homely feel in your most favorite room.

Furnishing

One of the easiest ways to add in rustic elements is by bringing them into upholstery.

Linen speaks simplicity. Discard synthetic and artificial fibers and fabrics.

Go for natural and safe materials for your upholstery and bedding.

Linen bed sheets are not only safe and hygienic, but are also very comfortable and soft to touch. Linen is environmentally friendly, breathable, allergen free, bacteria resistant and gentle on the skin. If you have young children at home linen fabrics are the best choice you can make for kids bedrooms. Linen is rustic chic and endows a unique country charm to your bedroom.

Rustic bedding sets that have primitive country décor themes are very popular and trending right now. Natural tones and earthy hues, and motifs depicting the wilderness, countryside features and natural landscape are also favored by leading designers and interior decorators.

Bespoke rustic style furniture is available in most home décor stores. But if you are not keen for new buys or a change, there are quite a few things you can do to make your seating arrangements look rural.

Pleasing and easy-on-the-eye colors like powder blue and green are suitable for countryside decor. Place throw pillows in these colors on your sofa to bring in a natural and warm feel to your room.

Easy-chairs made of pine, oak or recycled wood will also be suitable for rustic bedroom. There are plenty of DIY options also for you to try out. This DIY coffee table is a good weekend project for those keen to try out something on their own, and what about this rustic headboard?

Curtains and blinds also require your attention. It is important that you choose fabrics that go with the overall color palette of your room.

Choose fabrics that have earthy tones and countryside motifs. Leaves, livestock, flowers and meadows are very often embroidered, printed or sewn into window treatments. They are not exactly statement decorations, but are sublime references to country living that will help dress up your windows the rustic way.

Quilts

Quilts exude warmth and lived-in feel. To get the most beautiful rustic décor, invest in a few quality quilts. Even if you do not have a rustic themed bed sheet on your bed a quilt with a bear motif can more than makeup for that.

Rustic quilts, comforters and bedding sets feature motifs, prints and patterns of woodlands, rivers and lakes. You can choose quilts that have traditional patchwork designs or are accentuated with beauty of nature like camouflage prints, or designs of country wildlife like deer, moose, horse, bear, salmon or elk.

Moose and dear designs are very popular rustic décor themes. Cabin and lodge décor, and cowboy themes are also options that you can consider.

Rugs

Rugs in rustic accents give countryside charm to your interior décor. They often feature motifs like pine cone, bear, antler, moose, horse and rider, hunting imagery and fish.

If you browse through online interior design sites you will see that sheepskin and cowhide rugs are common in rustic interiors, and Northern and Aspen wilderness are popular motifs.

Choose appropriate rugs that you can place under the coffee table, use as area rugs or as the main carpet in your bedroom.
Braided, weaved and hooked wool rugs will all work well in your rustic-themed bedroom. Make sure they go with your overall interiors and do not overdo the motifs.

For example, if you have bear motifs on your bedding set, choose rugs that have landscape or woodland motifs. It would not be easy for you to work out combinations quickly. Spend some time, browse through online stores and settle for designs that complement each other.

Wardrobe

If you want a rustic looking wardrobe it is best to get one made from recycled or refurbished wood. They look distressed and match the barn/lodge décor you aim for.

If you have a wooden wardrobe you can get a professional to work on it to give the desired rustic look to it.
Rustic focuses on using ecofriendly and biodegradable materials. Rustic way of living also emphasizes recycling, repurposing and responsible buying behavior. A simple living requires you to do the best with what you have and de-clutter your home and life of unwanted, unused and unnecessary stuff.

So purge your closet and only keep things that you know you will use. Donate or trash all unwanted items.

Organize your closet neatly. Invest in a few sets of quality bamboo hangers from Only Hangers. Not only are they functional and durable, but are also eco-friendly.

Other Knickknacks

Your bedroom should be a safe, secure and comfortable haven. Soothing and subtle color schemes encourage romance and intimacy.

Do not clutter the room and suffocate it. Earthy hues are calming and stress relieving. Potted plants and flowers are also good in bedrooms. But keep all accents and other decorations minimum, and allow for plenty of space.

Open space provides freedom to think, feel and see things more clearly. It helps you feel a sense of ownership of the place. Allow your partner to bring in his/her favorite photograph or painting, and you can keep your favorite wrought iron chandelier that is cabin elegance at its best.

Rustic charm is a way of life that is benevolent, kind and gentle. It simplifies simplicity and rural goodness. It is the best look you can give your bedroom and is easy to achieve and not very expensive. So for your next home re-decorating adventure you know what to do!

5 Must Haves for a Great Date Night In

Saturday, January 31, 2015

Some of the best moments that Dan and I have had - have been on our date nights. I love those times where we get to unplug, refocus and reconnect. The best date nights, have been the date nights at home. The kids enjoy spending evenings with their cousins or grandparents, so Dan and I take advantage of the empty house!

These are the date nights that remind me of our very first year together. We enjoyed the unique dining options available in our college town, but my favorite date nights were the evenings where we prepared a romantic meal at one of our apartments.

Years later, along with experience and items we placed on our wedding registry at Target, it is notably easier to accomplish the meals and atmosphere we had always set out to create. Coming off holiday engagements, couples start to think about registering! Here are our top picks for planning that perfect date night with your registry items.

5 Must Haves for a Great Date Night In

1. KitchenAid Ultra Power 4.5 Qt Stand Mixer

This amazing mixer would have saved me a lot of time and energy if I had it all those years ago. Dan loves my homemade brownies - however, they are difficult to make due to how thick the batter is. Mixing it by hand is tiresome. This will come in handy when preparing that special meal or dessert for your night in.

2. Calphalon Stainless Steel Cookware

Having great cookware is essential to preparing the perfect meal for your special night. Though it isn't impossible to prepare that perfect meal - having a quality set of pans and skillets certainly makes it easier for me to get the job done.

3. Threshold Etched Glass Drinkware Collection

Gone are the days of our plastic cups from local pizza eateries. Okay, that's a lie. Dan has insisted on keeping a lot of those. However, for our special nights - I choose a more elegant drinkware.

4. SONOS PLAY: 5 Wireless HiFi System

Music can set the tone for any evening. A wireless HiFi system allows you to create that atmosphere regardless of where you decide to have that date-night in.

5. Nikon P530 16.1MP Digital Camera

I wish that we had captured more of our dating experiences on camera. In fact, I'm not sure that either one of us even owned a camera when we dated. Capture a few fun memories, snap a shot of the favorite meals you've prepared and cherish these date nights for a lifetime.

Remember to add these items to your Target Wedding Registry! The Target wedding registry is an easy and engaging experience with inspirational starter lists. You'll also receive a 15% off completion offer - the week of your event which means that you’ll receive a coupon for saving 15% on remaining registry items in store and online. Changed your mind on an item? Returns are easy!

What are you planning for date nights in this year?

26 Yummy Cookies and Bars for the Holidays!

Monday, December 15, 2014

It's time to start baking for the holidays! I enjoy baking pies, breads and other delicious treats in the fall, but in the winter it's all about cookies and bars! This year, we'll be testing a few new recipes and making our the traditional sugar and chocolate chip cookies. We'll also be making our house favorite, buckeyes! They aren't cookies or bars, but they are oh so yummy!

When the kids were younger, they weren't big fans of gingerbread. It was a bit too 'spicy' for them. I'm hoping that this year, their tastes will have change enough to enjoy these delicious and beautiful gingerbread cut out cookies!

For Dan, I think he may enjoy the Italian Christmas cookies. They look so light and sweet!

I love sugar cookies. A lot. I can't pass them up and I'm so disappointed when they aren't yummy. I have a difficult time getting them as sweet and soft as I want. So I'm going to try this recipe for Buttery Cut-Out Sugar Cookies W/ Icing That Hardens. The kids will enjoy making these as they love anything they get to shape. We have around 200 cookie cutters and this turns into an all afternoon project. So much fun!

I'm deciding whether or not I want to make the Caramel Cookie Cheesecake Bars and take them to the family Christmas party. They look so good, but I'm not sure I really want to share them. Though, it is always fun having bringing the dessert that disappears the quickest, isn't it?

Which recipe below would you take to a family get-together? Maybe I'll make and take what you suggest!

Why you should check your engine fluids & a $50 giveaway with Sears Auto Center!

Sunday, December 14, 2014

"This is a sponsored post, I am a Sears blogger, though all opinions are my own."

I am going to be painfully and embarrassingly honest. I completely destroyed my first vehicle because I did not understand anything about vehicle fluids. I knew enough to put fuel into the tank. Yet, after that, I knew nothing. So, my first vehicle had a shorter life than it should have had.

As a part of the #SACRoadWarriors team, I have the opportunity to get a more in-depth look at vehicle maintenance. I had a great time visiting Sears Auto Center last week and getting an in-depth explanation of all the fluids your engine needs and why it needs them. I usually leave all of our vehicle maintenance up to Dan. I don't really have the time for it and he enjoys keeping vehicle records, checking different levels of this and that, making his spreadsheet, etc... I appreciate him for doing all of this. I would rather focus on the driving and traveling done with the vehicles. But my trip to Sears Auto Center was eye-opening. I need to pay more attention to the needs of the vehicle that I cart my family around in. I need to take care of it. When you think about it, we pay a lot of money for vehicles and put a lot of precious cargo in it daily. So, it only makes sense! Let's get to learning about engine fluids!

What’s the Deal with Differential Fluid?

That was the first question of the day. Say what? I have no idea! But, apparently, something is... different?? Well, it turns out that Differential Fluid is what keeps your Differential running smoothly and properly.

The Differential is a part of the Drivetrain and helps to evenly distribute power between each of your vehicle's wheels. As you take a turn, each wheel will have a different distance in which to turn and travel - hence the 'differential'. The fluids which keep this operating smoothly are very often overlooked. In my case, I'm not sure I had ever even heard the term "Differential Fluids". I knew what the Drivetrain was and the Differential but never knew to check the specific fluids that are required for that portion of the vehicle.

Transmission Fluid: The Other Dipstick

I'm happy to say that I did know about Transmission Fluid. Yet, I admit that I have never given much thought to checking or changing it. Since having killed my first car, I do know to check the motor oil. However, checking the other dipstick never crosses my mind.

The Transmission Fluid lubricates and cools your transmissions internal parts which helps the gears to smoothly shift and prevent damage. If not properly maintained, you can damage your transmission and that can will be an expensive part to replace.

Did you know: Transmission fluid also acts as the hydraulic fluid needed to power your vehicle.

Depending on the age of a vehicle, it may be difficult to quickly locate the Transmission Fluid dipstick. Do you think it is easily found on the vehicle below?

What's the difference between Coolant and Anti-Freeze?

Oh, trick question! They sound like extreme opposites, don't they? They are, in fact, the same exact thing. Depending on what time of year it is - you'll call it by a different name. Summer, call it Coolant. Winter, call it Anti-Freeze.

Coolant. Antifreeze. Radiator fluid. While each of these terms may sound very different, the fact is they all describe the same fluids that are critical to keeping your vehicle and its cooling system hydrated. Given its importance, one would think vehicle owners would carefully monitor and maintain the levels and quality of this fluid in their cars and trucks. However, the U.S. Department of Transportation claims that one of the leading causes of breakdowns on our highways is mechanical failures within vehicle cooling systems.

This, this fluid was the undoing of my first vehicle. The coolant/anti-freeze! I don't even want to begin explaining how much I didn't know about car care when I was 17 years old. But I will say this. Water is not the same thing and does not do the same job as coolant! It just doesn't.

It's also important to maintain your fuel system! To ensure your fuel system continues to operate effectively, consult your vehicle manufacturer service guide for recommended fuel system cleaning intervals

I can't wait for the next trip to my local Sears Auto Center! They've been a great help in teaching me how to maintain various aspects of my vehicle and I can't wait to see what they teach me in January. Stay tuned!

Remember to take a glance at that very important book which is probably getting dusty in your glove compartment. It will let you know the recommendations for fluid changes on your specific vehicle. Colorful Bow Tie Pork - Delicious!

Thursday, November 20, 2014

Standing by my side as I monitored the skillet and put the finishing touches on dinner, Joey grinned and then took off sprinting through the house.  I found out later that he had rushed to Dan to let him know that dinner smelled "So good!!"  I'd love to take the credit - but the Smithfield® Peppercorn & Garlic Pork was the reason for his excitement.

I do love seeing him get so excited about dinner!  He's so funny.  But I was also excited about this meal.  I found a fun and colorful recipe for Colorful Bow Tie Pork on foodlion.com that helped to brighten our weekly meal plan.  I love planning our family meal time - but admittedly, we can get into a routine of having the same meals week after week.  This was a nice addition to our list of favorites.  It was also a quick and easy meal to prepare.  Prep time was only about 15 minutes and was ready to serve at around 20 minutes.

We typically enjoy any meal that includes pasta but I often have a difficult time including vegetables in with our pasta dishes.  I also never think to use pork with our pasta - so this was a nice change!

Colorful Bow Tie Pork

Ingredients:

  • 1 Smithfield® Peppercorn Seasoned Boneless Sirloin Roast, cut into 3/4-inch cubes
  • 1½ teaspoons minced garlic
  • 2½ cups chopped fresh broccoli
  • 1½ cups sliced carrots
  • 1¼ cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons margarine
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ cup mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 large tomato, diced
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 12 oz. bow tie pasta, cooked
Hop on over to foodlion.com for the complete recipe with directions - I'm sure you'll love it!

Food Lion offers an array of tips and recipes for meal planning.  Definitely check out the Colorful Bow Tie Pork and let me know what you think.  What other Food Lion recipes will you be trying this week?

Tire Maintenance & $50 Giveaway with Sears Auto Center!

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

"This is a sponsored post, I am a Sears blogger, though all opinions are my own."

Though I love vehicles - driving them, admiring them, talking about them - there is a lot of information that I simply don't know. I thought I knew about tire maintenance, until a recent trip to Sears Auto Center. There's an entire world around tires, how to care for them and how to choose them. Since I do a lot of traveling - I'm extremely grateful for finally having all of this explained to me.

I'm loving being a part of the #SACRoadWarriors team and getting to spend time with the crew at my local Sears Auto Center. They have been amazing and on my first trip walked me through their Vehicle Intake process and the necessities of tire maintenance. When you bring your vehicle to Sears Auto Center, they will perform a Courtesy Inspection - courtesy means it's free! During the Courtesy Inspection they will check things such as belts and hoses, fluids, filters, tire wear and tear amongst other things.

Now, here is where I learned that tire maintenance is far more extensive than most of us know.  Tires are such a critical part of your vehicle and maintaining them properly is a must.  I knew that I should check the air pressure in my tires and have them rotated (about every 5,000 miles) and that they should generally look as if they are in good condition.

Signs of an impending blowout can include:

  • Bulges in the tire
  • Cracking in the sidewall of the tire
  • Low/no tread. Tread is lower than 2/32 of an inch deep.
  • Incorrect tire pressure

Did you know that where you live can play a large role in how you maintain your tires?  Here, in Indiana, the weather is cold, them warm, then oh so humid - this does a number on your tires and can cause pressure to fluctuate.

There are many other things to check when maintaining your tires. I never knew there was a difference in the tires between my sedan and my mini-van. They need different size tires for different purposes.  Every tire that is produced, has an intended purpose.  It's made for a specific type of vehicle and conditions.  Your vehicle's manual will let you know what size of tire it requires.  The tires will have its size printed on its sidewall.  The Sear's Tire Size Decoded information is very helpful in finding out if you have the right tires!  On a side note, I did know that large trucks needed different tires than my sedan - so, I guess I wasn't completely in the dark.

Here in Indiana, winter is on its way.  This means that you need to check the tread on your tire and perhaps even buy winter tires.  Did you that it's possible to buy your snow tires too early and wear the tread down too fast that way?  See, so much to know!

All-season tires are built to handle a variety of weather conditions, everything from dry roads to wet roads and light snow. However, the rubber with which all-season tires are made is not intended to withstand extreme cold. All-season tires can harden in low temperatures, lessening the traction between your tires and the road.

Winter tires, on the other hand, use special rubber compounds that stay pliable in the cold to give them better grip and improved braking capabilities, even in extreme conditions. Also called snow tires, winter tires are built specifically to perform in winter conditions like severe cold, ice, slush and snow. They use siping, a series of slits in the tread, to increase the number of edges that make contact with the ground. Greater tread depth allows for flexing and helps channel snow and slush across the tire’s surface, away from the contact patch.

Buy vitamins at Walgreens and help support Vitamin Angels!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm very serious about making sure that my family takes their vitamins! It can be impossible to ensure that your body is getting all the necessary vitamins from diet alone - so, vitamins are on our household staples checklist.

I always spend time finding the best deal on vitamins.  BOGO vitamin deals always catch my attention - quickly.  Currently, all Walgreens brand vitamins (and supplements) are buy one get one free - so we've stocked up! The kids were ecstatic last month to get the gummy vitamins Walgreens offers.  I've also made sure that we have plenty of Vitamin C as well multivitamins for Dan and myself.

When shopping for vitamins, you might find it useful to know that you can help a child in need with every vitamins or supplements purchase at Walgreens. Millions of children around the world are suffering from ‘hidden hunger’, a lack of micronutrients that can lead to disease and even death. In fact, 45% of all childhood deaths are attributable to under-nutrition. Walgreens is giving a portion of all vitamin retail sales to Vitamin Angels to help 100 million children in the U.S. and abroad get the vitamins they need to live well.

I love that our purchase helped to support Vitamin Angels.  Walgreens is partnering with Vitamin Angels - which means that with every purchase of vitamins at Walgreens, Walgreens will make a donation to Vitamin Angels! They'll make this donation regardless which brand of vitamin you purchase!

By 2017, Walgreens and Vitamin Angels aim to reach 100 million children and mothers in over 40 countries worldwide. Specifically, children under five, pregnant women and new mothers gain access to life changing vitamins and minerals.

Prepping for cold season with Walgreen's Vitamins!

Savannah and Joey have always been so good at taking their vitamins. Well, Savannah hated them when she was an infant and I gave her vitamin drops. Other than that, they rarely forget to grab their vitamins along with their breakfast each morning.

We generally take a multivitamin each day and if health or the time of year calls for additional vitamins – we add them to the lineup. They love it when I buy the Multi-vitamin Gummies - but I usually buy the chewable vitamins.

Excited to have Mutli-Vitamin Gummies!

Throughout the year I focus on different nutritional needs for all of us. Now that fall is here, I recommend and am focused on our Vitamin C and D intake. We are spending less and less time outdoors and in the sun - and cold season is on its way. So, this is why I choose to increase our Vitamin C and D during the fall and winter.

I think it is so important to make sure that our bodies get the nutrients and vitamins it needs – that it isn’t getting from our diet. Not only do I have my children take vitamins daily, I talk with them about how their body is benefiting from each vitamin. I’ve also made sure to stock up on vitamins at Walgreens this month! They, along with Vitamin Angels are helping children get the vitamins they need!

As a child - and even in college - I never wanted to comply with my mother’s instruction to take my vitamins. I’m so glad she insisted! Now, I’m that mom reminding my kids and asking them if they remembered their vitamins. I’m a bit luckier though – my kids seem excited to take their vitamins everyday and I’m so glad they do. What vitamins are you taking daily or seasonally?

Miracle Marathon: Why I Won’t Quit

Tuesday, October 7, 2014

Most of the parents and kids we’re helping would probably love a day off from cancer. They’d probably love to “just call it done” when it comes to the daily treatment regimens for Cystic Fibrosis. There are moms right now whose babies came into this world too early, who would love to give their tiny daughter a break from her fight to simply keep breathing.

But they can’t quit, because it’s not an option. I honor them today and everyday by not quitting on them. I came up with a couple of fresh asks that I can put on my social media accounts, and I’m redoubling my efforts as we head into the last stretch of Miracle Marathon.

Sensory Friendly Performance: Rapunzel!

Dallas Children's Theater (DCT) is working to make theater accessible for children with developmental disabilities. RAPUNZEL! RAPUNZEL! A VERY HAIRY FAIRY TALE on Saturday, October 11 at 4:30 p.m. will be the third sensory-friendly offering by the theater since the program started. Over 600 guests have attended these special shows.

After years of requests from families, DCT is now giving many children with sensory sensitivity the chance to enjoy live theater. RAPUNZEL! actors and production staff have worked with sensory-processing experts to develop this special performance featuring a fun retelling of the traditional fairy tale in the vein of Shrek.

The sensory-friendly performance of RAPUNZEL! will be at the Rosewood Center for Family Arts. Guests of all ages are encouraged to come starting one hour early on a come-and-go basis to enjoy fun, pre-show activities. The ticket price for this and most future sensory-friendly performances will be $10 per person. While somewhat higher than the ticket price for DCT’s two introductory performances, this price is still significantly less than the normal ticket price. DCT hopes that after two shows, families of children with different sensory needs understand the value of the theater experience and will make the transition to a price that enables the program to be more sustainable for the long term now that the national grant that subsidized the program is ending. However, if this price is troublesome, guests may contact DCT to request a scholarship.

DCT is pleased to be able to offer these specially-adapted plays for the enjoyment of those with sensory needs. General production adaptations include leaving the house lights up a few levels higher than for a standard performance and reducing the sound level. We also offer a "Quiet Room" for children who need a break. DCT wants to especially thank all of the sponsors and supporters who have helped make these shows possible for 2014 and 2015.

Do you have sensitive teeth? I do!

Thursday, September 18, 2014

On one of my recent trips to the dentist - I found out that yes, the dentist and hygienist know exactly what I have and have not been doing when it comes to taking care of my teeth and gums. "I see that you've been brushing too hard," she said while examining my teeth.

Busted! Yes, I admit. I want those pearly whites and so I've brushed my teeth much too aggressively. Now, I have the pleasure of dealing with sensitive teeth. I whence a little as I sip on my sweet tea or cringe just a bit when my teeth encounter ice cream.

As I sat in the chair listening to the hygienist explain why she was sending a soft toothbrush home with me, I thought to myself. "I'm just getting older and there's nothing that can be done. Goodbye sweet tea! Goodbye frozen custard! When I'm feeling brave, we'll meet again."

Though I wasn't able to attend - I was recently invited to an event where Dr. Travis Stork, Emmy® nominated TV host of The Doctors, spoke on the issue of sensitive teeth and what can be done to help those who suffer from it.  I know, I'm kicking myself for not being able to make it!   Dr. Stork, a board-certified emergency medicine physician, has partnered with Crest and Oral-B Pro-Health to help others understand that a healthy mouth is an important part of a healthy body.

Even though I couldn't be there, I did find out that I do have option to help protect my teeth and block the pain that cold drinks and treats can cause. Crest® Pro-Health® Toothpaste offers comprehensive protection for your teeth in the following areas: cavities, gingivitis, plaque, fresh breath, tartar, whitening and sensitivity!

I can also use Crest Sensi Stop Strips for immediate sensitivity relief. The strips are small, flexible and semi-transparent. They give immediate and long-lasting tooth sensitivity relief. Instead of living with pain when trying to enjoy ice cream with the kids - or forgoing the moment all together - I simply use a Sensi Stop Strip. This allows me to enjoy the moment with my children without cringing.

I was amazed to find out that more than 50 percent of people will experience tooth sensitivity at some point in their life caused by weakened enamel, gum recession and other factors. I haven't heard a lot of people talk about their sensitivity and have also not talked much about mine.

Early stages of tooth sensitivity typically begin when people are in their 30s and 40s however any one can be susceptible as the age at which most sufferers first experience tooth sensitivity can range from 20-49 years old. I've had sensitivity since my 20s. The onset largely depends on oral care habits and practices such as over-aggressive brushing or gum disease. I believe my aggressive brushing was a large factor for my sensitivity to cold.

The benefit and ease of use are winning factors for me. I love that I can do this at home and immediately see results. As I mentioned above, I'm always doing my best to keep my teeth white. So I've used the Crest whitening strips often. The Sensi Stop Strips are easy to use just like the whitening strips!
