Winter Happened and We Were Snowed In!

It has finally reached that time of year again! It's getting cold, the holidays are fast approaching and schedules are becoming packed! A lot of us will be traveling, visiting family and making wonderful memories.

I always look forward to the time that I get to spend with family - especially this time of year. Our reunions, parties and dinners hold some of my best childhood memories. I was so excited to begin making these memories with my own children once Dan and I were married.

Our second Winter as a married couple started off mild and would remain that way - or so I thought. It was cold as usual but there was little snow at first. We drove to family gatherings, brought desserts, visited and showed off my growing belly... I was pregnant with our first child! We were very excited! This would be a great Christmas to spend with family.

However, the weather had different plans. The days leading up to Christmas were filled with snow. Snow. Snow. Snow. So much snow, that we couldn't get out of our apartment. We waited and watched as the snow continued to fall. Within 24 hours - over 30 inches of snow fell and essentially trapped us in our apartment. Evening visits with family and Christmas parties were missed. When we finally pushed our screen door open and dug a path to our vehicles - we found that they were also buried. It would be another day or so before we could even leave.

We missed the Christmas Eve festivities but finally made it to visit family on Christmas day. Though it was fun to be snowed-in with Dan those few days, I would hope that it never happens again so close to the holidays!

Family Holiday Traditions

I absolutely love this time of year! Thanksgiving is just around the corner and before we know it - the kids will be building snowmen, decorating the house with me and ripping through wrapping paper to see what awesome gifts they've received. I remember the anticipation I had as a child as I waited for this time of year to arrive. It is and has always been my favorite season.

One of my most memorable holiday traditions was driving around with my family and seeing all the lights and decorations. Some people are so creative and fun at creating Winter wonderlands all around their home. The bright and colorful lights always amazed me and drew me in. They almost seemed magical.

That's probably why one of my favorite current family traditions is to make a cup of hot chocolate for everyone, bundle up and drive around to see the lights. Specifically, we take the kids to see the lights and decorations at Fort St. Clair. They have hundreds of decorations and thousands of lights! You are able to get out and walk among some of them on your way to see Santa in a cabin warmed by a fireplace.

I love that this is a new tradition that was based on an older family tradition. I look forward to adding more as the years go by.

My kids love the tradition of making their Christmas wish list and dropping it in the mail to Santa!  Our courthouse provides an adorable oversized mailbox specially made for delivering important letters to the North Pole.  This year, we'll add an electronic version to make sure Santa doesn't miss their list.
